Could the female contraceptive pill be affecting the sperm counts of men?

I recently saw an interesting article on a website about how the female contraceptive pill can be responsible for lower sperm counts in males.
Apparently, there are two ingredients, Estrogen and Progesterone, that neutralise sperm cells. A woman passes them in her urine after taking the pill, but both ingredients cannot be filtered out of the water at the sewage plant, therefore, re-entering the drinking supply. A man can then drink these chemicals in tap water, which over a long period of time, can affect his fertility.

Is there any truth in this?

Yes Gemma but they can filter alcohol out of water. The whole point here is that Estrogen and Progesterone CAN NOT be filtered out of water.

There is some evidence for this, and the story has been around for a while. There is also evidence that some other manufactured materials also break down into oestrogenic compounds which also enter the water supply. It is thought to explain much of the proven reduction in Western sperm counts and the increase in male infertility.

It sounds like nonsense to me.

That sounds pretty rubbish to me. Water is so carefully filtered now days. It's like saying you could get drunk from it cause alcohol goes the same way!!

I'd heard this story, then being told it was an urban myth because the quantities were so insignificant...but

No truth to that. For one thing, very few places recycle their sewer water to be reused as drinking water. Secondly, water is the greatest way to break up any chemical or biological substance, through sheer volume--- dissolution of any substance in a large body of water tends to render it harmless or undetectable.

never heard of that. Not listed under STD. Although don't have a medical degree. I do know that too much radiation will. I happened to me.

First of all water does not go from the sewage plant back into our drinking water it is treated and then sent back into the natural Eco system where it is diluted by all that other water in the world making the trace amounts less than even one part per a trillion.
Second both of those chemicals need to be active to work and they are not active after being pissed out and treated by the sewage plant.

About the only way it could affect you would be if you took the pills yourself in that sense they would chemically castrate you.
