Sepsis question?

How long does someone have to live if they have sepsis without treatment? How long before symptoms appear? Please only answer if you know the correct answer. Thanks.

Hmm, well lets say a young person (18-20) with an otherwise healthy system, no illnesses. If lets say, an infection speads to the blood and causes the sepsis, can the sepsis cause another infection without symptoms of sepsis (such as fever and whatnot)? What ammount of time from the point of the second infection would the person notice more syptoms? How long is it possible to go with sepsis without other symptoms at all?

Septicaemia, a condition of increasingly high levels of bacteria in the circulatory system and resulting infection of tissues and organs. Sepsis, a term which refers to the source of infection, can also be used to refer to septicaemia. Bacteraemia (or blood poisoning) precedes the onset of septicaemia, and indicates simply the presence of bacteria in the blood; unlike septicaemia, bacteraemia is not life-threatening.

In septicaemia, bacteria may enter the bloodstream from an infected area of the body or after an injury or surgical procedure, and once there begin to multiply rapidly, spreading their toxins throughout the circulatory system. Septicaemia is characterized by chills, fever, tachycardia (rapid heart rate), tachypnoea (rapid breathing), and a high white blood cell count. If septicaemia is allowed to proceed, septic shock (or sepsis syndrome) may follow. Septic shock is an extremely serious, potentially fatal condition that may cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure, organ damage, or even organ failure, particularly of the kidneys, heart, and lungs. Under circumstances which favour the development of septicaemia, it is more likely to occur in people who suffer from a suppressed immune system (immunodeficiency). Septicaemia is treated with appropriate antibiotics.

Good Luck,

There is no black and white answer to this question! A lot of factors would play into those answers! First of all, what organism is causing the sepsis? Some are definately more virulent than others. What is the state of the persons general health otherwise? Do they have heart or lung disease? Are they immune compromised? Also, are there and complications from the sepsis such as endocarditis?
Speaking in very general terms, and speaking of usual bacteria that would cause sepsis in an otherwise healthy middle age person-I would say They would have symptoms within 24 hours of the time the bacteria would show up on a culture and how long would they live? Again with a NORMAL person, there is a chance they could fight off a bacteria on their own but if not probably within 10-14 days.
