Sepsis/kidney stone Please Help!!!?

Hello, I was diagnosed with a 14 mm kidney stone this past Thursday. The doctors placed a stent in my kidney to drain it and since it was so large, I am to go back next week to have the stone broken up. Apparently the pressure forced bacteria into my blood (sepsis). I had been warned that this was a possibility and I was informed today that I had it. Everything iI read about this condidtion says that sepsis has a 40-60% fatality rate and it ALWAYS needs to be treated in a hospital. However, my surgeon's assistant says I am fine at home taking the antibiotic. I got a second opinion from my own doctor and he says the same thing, only to increase my antibiotic dosage. I did tell them I thought I was improving since the fevers don't go as high or last as long now, but still I am terrified! Anyone have personal experioence with this condition? Doctors especially, can you weigh in on this?

Do what two doctors told to you. Their DOCTORS for a reason. If you don't trust them then ask another doctor too.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT. STOP BE TERIFIED OR ANXIOUS. STRESS IS THE WORSE DOCTOR.

My sister had same experience and she was at home taking antibiotics.

You have your own doctor, cause you trust him. So listen to his advice.

What you read is about severe sepsis.

With sepsis, the body's response, instead of being localized to the site of infection, causes symptoms to occur throughout the body (this is known as a systemic response). THIS IS YOUR CASE. Treatment with antibiotics at home is what doctors advice.

When systemic response SPIN OUT OF CONTROL and there is a danger to damage one or more vital organs, (like kidney, heart, or lugs) then patient must be stay in hospital.
( are likely to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) until their organs begin working properly) THAT'S NOT YOUR CASE.

And as fever start to slow down this is a sign of treatment. FEVER IS THE "WEAPON" buddy use against any "intruder". So when fever slow down that mean the "intuder" start to retreat.

So stop be anxious. All we'll go well.

Enjoy your holidays.

Wish you fast recovery.

Merry Christmas/Happy new year

Okay the mortality rate is high.. but not that high. 28.6% is what I read. If your fever is not as high, then you are going to be fine. Really. Sepsis is from mild to severe, and you have obviously a mild case. don't worry. Just take the meds, stay hydrated and be calm. You will be fine.

I would follow the doctors orders, they should know what there doing since they been to medical school. Just take all of your meds and you should be fine.

Marshmallow root tea daily help to cleanse the kidney and expel the kidney stone drink 1 quart daily

uva ursi help to relieve pain and bloating

A sepsis can be fatal if left untreated or it advances to a state where you need hospitalization for super anti-biotic treatments--you obviously have not been at that level or you would be in the hospital. This same condition can be from a ruptured appendix or even a tooth infection--poisons circulating in the blood can do a lot of damage. So stick to the recommended antibiotics that you are on--relax and let the condition get better naturally. You might want to get some advice on what was the contributing factors for stones--heredity, diet, etc. Then plan on your future course of action to avoid what you can. It is tough to be the patient and do the long waiting and worrying--sorry you have to endure this. Just relax and do what you have to--try to be comfortable and do what you can to pass the time. Please have faith in your doctors--they would not do you wrong. Merry Christmas and enjoy the holiday as best as you can.

Sepsis used to kill EVERYONE who got it before antibiotics were invented. My mother's sister stepped on a stick and got an infection in her foot and died at age 12 in 1940. This was before I was born and before antibiotics were invented. We are so lucky to live in this day and age. Antibiotics are so specific now that if sepsis does kill someone, it is because they waited way too long before they went for treatment. Your doctor must have done a blood culture and when they do that they can find out what antibiotics the bacteria is susceptible to .Your infection was caught quickly. Just don't stop taking your antibiotic when you start feeling better. Take the whole round. If you forget a pill, take it as soon as you remember and re-arrange your antibiotic schedule even if you have to set an alarm to do so, so you don't miss any doses. You should be Ok.

Calm down. You will be OK, just a little misunderstanding in a loosely used term "sepsis". "septic shock" has a mortality sounding aound the number you quote. "sepsis" on the other hand, means there are bacteria in your blood stream, and that's it. A lot of times doctors say you are "septic" because you have a fever and thus presumedly you have bacteria in your blood stream as the source, but unless they took blood cultures and they grew bacteria (usually takes a day or more) they are just assuming you have the bacteria in your blood stream, thus you may not even be "septic"
Signs of septic shock (the one that carries with it a 60% mortality) that you can look out for are: severe weakness, confusion/ lethargy, feeling lightheaded, etc. Needless to say, the fact that you are typing a question and saying that your fever is going down tells me that you do not have septic shock.
For your edification, you might look up the terms "sepsis" "septic shock" and "systemic inflammatory response syndrome" for more clarification. Best of luck with the lithotripsy and hope you are feeling well enough to enjoy the holiday season =)
