My son has sepsis?

my son was born at 31 weeks ,on 23 april, they told me at 3 weeks old he has a infection called sepsis,he has had a longline in for 3 weeks now, just wondering if anyone knows about this and how long will he be in hosp,he is nearly 6 weeks old ,he has also had some adema

sepsis is an infection in the blood. you said the dr. told you 3 weeks ago that he was septic but he has been in there for 6 weeks now. he was probably already treated with antibiotics to help him. about the edema, if he is small and not taking full feeds with a bottle, then he is still on an IV giving him extra nutrients. we are all a little edemitous when we drink a lot of water, same thing with these little guys.
I always tell my parents that you should be able to expect him home around his due date. BUT he also has to be 2000 grams which is 4 pounds and he has to be eating all his feeds and all the amount that the doctors know what will make him gain weight. I wish you luck, my heart goes to all parents who are in your situation. Please post more information, and updates. Thanks =-)

The suck swallow coordinstion will kick in. Boys are a little behind in that department. I know it is hard, so just hang in there and if you have any more questions please email me esmth517@aol.com
I will help in any way that I can. Im not only a nurse in NICE but a mother of 2 ex-premies! =-) Report It

Sepsis is a broad term for an infection that has spread to his blood stream and entire body system. You need to post more info for more help.

Sepsis is a very serious infection that must be treated with antibiotics, however, it is also a very common infection that hospitals deal with every day. Given the age of your child there are likely some complications with treatment, but its certainly not something to be rushed. Speak with your pediatrician - they can inform you about the infection and how they are treating it. While the condition is serious, it is also very curable.

Good luck and God bless.
