what is Yahoo Answers apinion and please no rude commets just lost my mom of cancer in july of 06"

my dad is 81 years old if that helps

I am very sorry to hear about your dad.

The most important thing right now is to try and remember if you father had any opinions about how he wanted to spend his last years/months/weeks/days.

Did he value comfort? If he did then hospice might be the right answer.

If he wanted to live as long as possible despite undergoing uncomfortable (or even painful) procedures, then keeping him in the hospital is the right answer.

To echo what I said above: when you make the decision, your own values should not overtake what you father would have wanted. The reason is that you are speaking on his behalf - you should make the choices that he would have wanted.

Hospice would make him comfortable. Depending on how old your father is, the older we get, the hard it is for us to fight off things, even with medical help. Placing him in hospice would certainly be a smart move if that's what's needed...they would definitely make sure he's not suffering in his remaining days.

The first question I would ask is why your father is septic? Although sepsis is very serious and in alot of cases fatal it really has alot of factors such as where it developed, the age of the patient etc. I am afraid w/o this info it would be hard to say. I do however wish your father well and will keep you in my thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. He sounds quite ill. If it is just an infection that can be treated with antibiotics, that is one thing, but it sounds like there might be more going on than that. His doctor surely knows much more about his medical condition than any of us here, so he/she would know whether there is any hope of his returning to a good quality of life. Doctors do not suggest hospice lightly. If you do decide to go with hospice, they can really help keep him comfortable, and they can help you and the rest of your family during this difficult time. I am hoping for the best for your dad.

Hospice is a service to care for people who are terminal. It is my opinion that you should spend as much time with your father as you can, let him know that you are there and that you care. Hospice will help you care for his needs, as I am sure you will be unable to do so by yourself. Sepsis is serious....his whole body is infected. At his age is it difficult to recover from something like that. If your father is in a lot of pain and suffering, you may want to reconsider the feeding tube, as this will only prolong the process. Good luck to you in whatever you decide.
