What's it like to die of sepsis? |
Do you suffer for a prolonged period of time? Do doctors usually pump you full of pain killers so you don't know what's going on? Is it painful? Well, because during sepsis your blood pressure drops very low (due to dilated blood vessels, what is caused by bacterial toxins and the body's reaction), before one dies he would be unconscious. The brain would not get enough blood and oxygen (state of shock), what means the dieing person would fall asleep. Then into a coma, and then the person would die without being aware of it. However, before this unconsciousness would occur, it would be a pretty bad feeling to have sepsis, because of the extremely high body temperature and intoxication - a period that would last for days. Sepsis is not a disease in itself, but a condition of systemic infection - it can come from a urinary tract infection, pneumonia or other untreated infection that spreads to the whole body. Usually it is seen in older patients. It is treated with antibiotics and IV fluids, and other methods of handling infection, like draining abscesses, etc. People can die from it. Not all people die from sepsis. With early treatment, many recover. If the sepsis is overwhelming their body, often they just go to sleep and never wake up again. No, they do not pump you full of pain killers. Sepsis often has no pain associated with it - it is an overwhelming infection in your body and infections (such as bloodstream, pneumonia, urosepsis) do not cause pain. |
