How long can a catheter stay in to help someone urinate before it has to be changed?

can a catheter cause sepsis if left in to long

It needs to come out as soon as possible. Care needs to be taken when emptying the catheter collection bag - handwashing is very important. The point at which the catheter enters the body needs to be kept clean as well. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to sepsis, but it can happen to anyone. Before sepsis occurs, symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) will occur. Pain, fever, burning among others.

Yes it can cuase sepsis. she couldnt find how long it can be in. sorry

no more than one week

It depends on the care that a catheter gets. An indwelling catheter can stay for 2-4 weeks depending on the care.

depends on patients age/immune status
with older people, hiv, people on immunosuppresants more susceptible to infections
