What happens to test animals deprived of selenium? Does selenium affect the heart?

According to doctors prescribing it liver deterioration occurs in animals deprived of selenium. The same doctors say selenium is needed for healthy heart.

It has beneficial effect on liver diseases, It should not reach serum level of 400 microgram, or it can cause myocardial infarction as shown in several studies, mechanism not known.

selenium is a tricky thing you have to have a balance too much (toxicity) can be fatal too little (deficiency) can be fatal.
the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for selenium at 400 mcg.

I dont really know its effect on the liver but deficiency in it causes a heart disease called keshan disease. Keshan is a place in china were there is very little selenium in the soil so deficiency in it is common. It causes wasting of the heart muscle.
