Seizures ? |
I have a 14 year old son. About 7 months or so ago, I started noticing him "zoning" out occasionally. 20 sec's or less. I would call his name, and he wouldnt respond. He would make an "uh uh uh" sound...and then be back to normal. After talking w/ my mom... who thought teachers would notice if it "was" something, and he is getting straight A's in school, and played soccer.. didnt think he would be able to do all this, if in fact he did have "seizures" of some type. I didnt do anything about it...thought maybe I was making it more than what it was. Well today... my husband and I both are noticing it more. He has no recollection of it..and it can happen in the middle of him doing something, example, we were moving a ping pong table to the basement, and set it down for a second, and went to continue down the stairs, and he was "zoned" out.. making the uh uh uh sound. Then he comes back..and continues... I have read info on the web about petit mal seizures.... And I am guessing this is what it may be. My questions is this.. will he grow out of this? Do I need to take him in? Is it common at this age? I am wandering if he has had it all along, and I am just now starting to keep an eye out for it? Please take your son to a physician as soon as you can. There are occasions when someone may seem like they have grown out of the seizures but really are just having less and not as noticeable ones. Have your son properly diagnosed. As an added element to helping with the diagnosis, video tape your son when this is happening - do it more than once, make sure the date/time stamp on the camera is set right. Doctors may diagnosis it as something completely different based only on your description. The video will allow them to actually see it. It may seem awkward to do while you know what your son is doing but it will help to get an accurate diagnosis. Don't rely on the teachers at school to tell you if something is wrong - most have like 30 kids to look after these days and if they have one that is more obnoxious than others that is the one they pay attention to. Teachers are also quick to suggest the ADD diagnosis, IMHO. take him to a neurolgist, he may have problems where they can get worse if he doesnt see about it, i had them when i was that age i did i guess grow out of them, havnt had one in 12 yrs. but they are no fun to the person having them or the person seeing them have it......my opinion only, see the doctor for both yalls sakes.....good luck Yup petit mal; please do go and see your family doctor about this, as it could progress to grand mal. Take him to see a neurologist. My baby had seizures since birth. At first I was the only person convinved that he was having seizures (the doctors didn't believe me). I happened to mention it to another neurologist and they ran test. They discovered he was having partial seizures. He was put on medicine, but his seizures only kept getting stronger and more frequent and he would pause in his breathing. He ened dying at two years old after having a seizure because he never started back breathing. Take your son to a doctor and don't stop asking questions until he starts getting better. Also, petit mal seizures can be a sign of brain tumors. Please see a physician. My daughter who is now 21 used to zone out and everyone thought that she was daydreaming. At one point I lost custody of her. While she was away from me they gave her just about every mental illness diagnosis possible. They kept her on high doses of psychotropic medications and multiple medications. When she turned 18 she asked if she could move back in with me. She did and a few months after she moved in she stopped taking the medications for about a year. Then she went back on one medication and she started having seizures. I have a history of a seizure disorder. Once we got her to a neurologist we found out that there are more than just grand mal and petit mal seizures. There is what is called an absent seizure where it seems like they are daydreaming or zoning out. It is a form of epilepsy. If I were you I would take your son to a neurologist. Good Luck. |
