Trying to understand seizures?

my daughter has just been diagnoised with seizures, although all the medical support has been fantastic i am still finding it difficult to come to terms with, when she is having a seizure her pupils go fixed and dilated, she becomes unresponsive and have jerking movements. at the moment she not being diagnoised with epilepsy, but does this sound like an epilectic seizure or a common seizure. I know it can be difficult to put a name to certain seizures but i would like to get more information. any useful websites anyone can give will be appreciated. thanks all.

she is a special needs child with a rare brain disease known as non specified lekodystrophy, she has very little white matter in her brain and she also has microcephaly (small head).

I have epilepsy. There are many types of seizures, for me i have atonic drop, i lose consiousness, go limp and fall to the floor. I also have absence and complex partial seizures.

Does she get a warning before a seizure? Identifying the warning, or aura as its called can be useful in identifying where the seizures originate from, typically these include de ja vu, a metallic taste in the mouth. For me i have visual disturbances which highlights that my epilepsy originates in the occipital lobe.

Tonic clonic (previously called Grand mal) are the typical seizures people think of when you mention epilepsy, its a rythmical jerking and usually there is tongue biting and occasionally incontinence, there are jerks, absence seizures, partial seizures, complex partials, nocturnal and so on and so forth.

I'm a member of a great forum, they have lots of people with various forms of seizures, not just epileptic in origin but non epileptic seizures too. that web address is

http://www.epilepsyforum.org.uk

http://www.epilepsy.org.uk is a great informative site so is the National Society for Epilepsy which is

http://www.epilepsynse.org.uk/

Since she hasnt been actually diagnosed with epilepsy has she had the usual tests...CT or MRI and an EEG? an EEG can be the nost useful in diagnosing epilepsy but witness reports are just as vital.

I hope that you get some answers soon. Good luck

My ex wife had epilepsy and bad seizures that started ever since puberty hit in her early teenage years. Seems hers was hormonal based. She had seizures all the time till she got the right balance of medicine.

this site has alot of info for parents and kids to understand what is happening. it tell about the different types of seizures.

It is really hard to tell from what you have said if is full body jerking or part of the body. Does epilepsey run in the family? or has she had a recent head injury. They will need to know where the seizures are coming from by catching on a EEG and they will need to know the triggers. You can have seizures without being an epileptic. It just varies so much I hope these two link's help you.

A seizure is a temporary abnormal electro-physiologic phenomenon of the brain, resulting in abnormal synchronization of electrical neuronal activity. It can manifest as an alteration in mental state, tonic or clonic movements, convulsions, and various other psychic symptoms (such as d茅j脿 vu or jamais vu). It is caused by a temporary abnormal electrical activity of a group of brain cells. The medical syndrome of recurrent, unprovoked seizures is termed epilepsy, but some seizures may occur in people who do not have epilepsy.

The treatment of epilepsy is a subspecialty of neurology; the study of seizures is part of neuroscience.

Non-epileptic seizures are paroxysmal events that mimic an epileptic seizure but do not involve abnormal, rhythmic discharges of cortical neurons. They are caused by either physiological or psychological conditions. The latter is discussed more fully in psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

I am epileptic and to be honist it does sound like epilepsy i was originaly diagnosed as having seizures while they were investigating.

try this site i hope it helps if you have any questions feel free to email me

Sounds to me she is having what is called "grand mal seizures" Look this up and you will find lots of information to help you understand symptoms and treatment. Good luck and often this can be controlled by medications.

It sounds like an epileptic seizure to me. My daughter suffers with nocturnal epilepsy, which means she has seizures in her sleep. The first time my daughter had one was the most terrifying experience of my life. It took me ages to come to terms with her condition, but it still terrifies me now. It's basically something you have to learn to cope with. There are over 40 different forms of epilepsy. I became a member of the British Epilepsy Association and found their help invaluable. My daughter's consultant gave me their details. Good luck to you both .xx
