Smoking Vs. Secondhand Smoke?

My roommate is a smoker. I am thinking of smoking myself, but everyone keeps telling me how bad it is. But isn't secondhand smoke worse than actually smoking? Since I'm already in a smoke-filled enviornment, what is the harm in actually smoking?

Yes secondhand smoking is worse than first hand smoking, because you aren't getting it through a filter. But you are only getting second hand smoke when you are around your roommate, if you start smoking you will get first hand smoke every time you light up, then it isn't easy to quit because you become addicted the nicotine, it's just best not to get started.

2ndhand smoke is bad too, no question - but that's like saying, "well, I'm already stuck in a burning building, I might as well pour gasoline on myself". You'll eventually move out, but if you start smoking, you'll be addicted yourself by then. Not to mention the time you are there you'll be getting twice as much smoke inhilation.

Yes, 2nd hand smoke is worse than smoking but why don't you ask your room mate to smoke outside because it is your right to have clean air in the place you live. Smoking is a bad idea! If I were you I would think twice about taking up such a nasty/expensive habit.

The effects of secondhand smoke exposure are grossly exaggerated. Despite claims by the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and other health organizations and anti-smoking nazis that thousands upon thousands of people die each year from secondhand smoke, they are unable to name even one single person who has died from it.

If you start smoking, you will regret it every day for the rest of your life and you will someday be trying so very hard to quit because you will be tired of smelling horrible, feeling bad, having bad breath, spending money to poison yourself, being stressed whenever you run out of smokes, etc etc. I speak from experience. And no no no, second hand smoke is not as bad - don't fall for that! Logic tells you that if you smoke you are getting both first hand and second hand smoke which is much worse than just second hand smoke. I am quitting and I regret like I can't even express that I ever started. My advice to you is get a different roommate or ask your roommate to smoke outside. You may be desensitized to the smell, but believe me, your clothes and hair probably reek of that old smoke smell just from being in the house with it. Even I (dedicated nicotine addict that I am) do NOT smoke in the house. It's too filthy and disgusting. Anyway, if I could go back in time I NEVER would have started. IT really does absolutely nothing good for you at all.
