Avoiding secondhand smoke?

My dad is an awful smoker. I like to go places with him and be around him, but what I hate about it is that he smokes so much, and I really don't want to breathe that in as much as I usually have to. I'm okay with it... it's just that I'd like to know if I could still spend time with him without breathing in the smoke.

Tell him about your feelings.

Just tell him that the smoke bothers you maybe he will try to keep it away from you.

not really. tell him it bugs you and see if he stops

Stop bitching about it. If you love your dad, you'll put up with it.

wear a gas mask

let him know that it bothers you in a nice way ...and he should care enough to hold off smoking until you r not around him!...i don't smoke but when i did i always respected others who didn't smoke!

buy a gas mask put it on everytime he lights up . mybe he will get the point

Talk with him about it. I'm sure he would be understanding about maybe cutting down a little when you two hang out. If not, maybe take him somewhere that is smoke free, like movies or a smoke free restaurant.

IF YOU HAVE TO WEAR A MASK, MAYBE HE WILL GET THE MESSAGE, AND FEEL SORRY FOR YOU, AND NOT SMOKE AROUND YOU. GOOD LUCK !!!

Tell him you don't mind if he smokes, but if he could please do it when he is not near you.

well u should ask ur dad can he not smoke so much around u and see what he says

It's absolutely impossible at times. I married a smoker(always said I would never). We live in Europe and most people smoke here. Switzerland anyway. Too bad for all this wonderful"clean" air. I pray for nice days when we can do things outdoors. As well as eat. There's nothing worse then inhaling that while you're trying to enjoy a nice meal. Yuck! If you're able, take walks together, and encourage being in the outdoors.

I'm sure if you bring it up to your Dad, he'll try to cut back around you. But he is your Dad, and at his age he's set in his ways. Smoking is an addiction AND a habit....old habits die hard. Just bring it up to him, ask if he will smoke less when around you and less in a non-ventilated area (like his car). Tell him you love spending time with him, but all the smoke is REALLY starting to get to you and it upsets your stomach or something. I'm a smoker, and when I'm around nonsmokers, I respect them in that way. For example...my Mom doesn't smoke, so when we go out to eat, I get nonsmoking....I can deal w/o a cigarette for that short time, and so can your father. Good luck!

It's a terrible habit... and real easy to quit.... I quit seven times last year alone! lol
You should just ask him if he would cut down the amount during the times that you're around. It is a very tough habit to break and I too have regretted ever starting. There is no way to get around the smoke merely because where there's smoke there's fire. If he is unreceptive to your request then either cut down the number of visits (which really isn't fair to either one of you) or put up with it. You could always use some Ozium. You can find it in drug stores, grocery stores and auto parts stores. It eliminates smoke and odor associated with cigarette smoking and works great! That would at least give you a second alternative.
Good luck and have a great day!!!

Hmm tough one.. because you don't want to be one of those bratty kids who tell their parents that smoking is bad and gonna kill them, etc... because trust me the adults already know and obviously dont think much about the facts.

Just make it obvious that you will not stand by him when he smokes. If he lights one up, say you'll meet him inside. Or if he leaves to have one make a face of annoyance. Just be creative in showing your annoyance in him putting smoking over you. Its hard and he may really not appreciate these new things you do, but over time he will hopefully realize that to be with you more, may mean less time with a cigarette in hand.

Good luck

Take him to a lung and throat cancer patient section of a hospital. If that doesn't help ask him to take out a life insurance policy real quick and name you as the beneficiary. If this fails wear a surgical mask when you are around him.

Just dont go in his house and if he comes to yours tell him he got to smoke outside-cause of breathing and geting your stuff smelly-thanks and amazing grace
