Does my hernia require surgery? Should I get a second opinion?

I was told yesterday at the ER that I have a mild hernia. He (the doc) said that it isn't surgical yet.

Is that ever the case? What can I do to keep it from getting to that point? Should I get a second opinion?

It is located on my right side, about six inches (or more) to my right (as I look down) of my belly button.

Hernias never get smaller on their own. THey either stay the same or get bigger.
You should be evaluated by a surgeon who will tell you whether it warrants surgery now or if you should wait. Anything that makes you strain (lifting weights, coughing, straining to go to the bathroom) can potentially make the hernia stick out or get bigger. There are laparoscopic approaches and open ones, so ask the surgeon you see whether they do one or the other or both. Also, if you are having symptoms (if that is why you were in the ER), then you should get it fixed sooner rather than later.

You could get a second opinion, and learn about the different surgeries (there are several techniques).

Not right away but you should take care of it.

It really depends on where the hernia is located, if inguinal you should watch out with lifting heaving objects. If it is hital hernia you can raise the head of your bed. Depends on where the hernia is located.

Take Care!

Yes hernias can get to the point of operable. Usually hernias are caused by lifting heavy objects, or sometimes people are just born with them. My sister was born with a hernia at her belly navel. She had it removed and is doing fine. I don't really know if there is something you can do to help it not get bigger, except don't lift heavy object by yourself maybe. Best to go to your family doctor, as ER physician are just for minor or major fixes until your regular doctor can see you.
