I haven't gotten an x-ray done in two years, and I'm currently 16. I'm pretty scared about it, as I really really really don't want surgery. It was 26 degrees and lumbar (lower back). Well, how fast it can advance depends on how fast you are growing. I had scoliosis when I was younger, and I still do because I never got surgery done on it and It started at a 19 degree lumbar curve and in two years advanced to a 23 degree curve. The doctor stopped having me come in because he said it wasn't progressing at a rate we should be worried about. 26 isn't bad. My cousin had a 32 degree lumbar curve and she didn't have to have surgery, she just wore a brace.If it doesn't cause you any discomfort, and you can walk and sit normal, you shouldn't have to have surgery unless it got A LOT worse in two years. hey im 14 years old and i have scoliosis as well mines bent 38 degrees but =) the back brace has really helped me out alot I have had Scoliosis all of my life and never required surgery. The older I get, it may get a little worse (I see my dad's back has gotten worse in his 80's). relax, if its not causing you any physical issues then avoid surgery. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 10, I am now 27 and it hasn't gotten any worse that I know of. I've never had pain from it. I don't even know how many degrees my spine is off. See a chiropractor instead of a surgeon that'll mess you up. you can get an xray at the chiros office and get help to prevent it from getting worse. A 26 degree curve is something that needs to be monitored, but you shouldn't assume the worst. (The "worst case" doesn't usually happen! But to answer your question, in major cases, a curve can increase 40 degrees in two years, ***but it rarely does.***) |
