SCOLIOSIS info pleaaaaseee?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis this year & I just turned 14.
I had a 20 degree curvature and 6 months later it still remained at 20 degrees.
I am really worried and upset that I have it,
Its idiopathic scoliosis meaning its unknown how it got scoliosis.
I dont really feel pain & I THINK i have my period because every month brown discharge comes out [dont take it in disgust please] but i havent really told my mom about the dischagre but i think she knows since she washes my clothes.

so here are my questions:

What degree do you have to wear a brace?

How long will I wear a brace?

Should I consider getting Spincor?

Can I wear the brace only at night and after school?

thank you soo much i need my worries to be gone at the moment and especially my moms worries

thank you!

its not easy for me to talk about this but i need some answers

Hon, I was 12 years old when I was diagnosed with scoliosis, so I can relate to what you are now going through. It was discovered because I had a lot of pain, especially sitting at my desk in school. I don't recall what the degree of curve is, but I did not wear a brace, either. My orthopedic doctor taught me \exercises to do to keep my back and abdominal muscles strong.

You don't have to wear a brace unless your scoliosis is between 30 and 50 degrees. Since yours has remained stable at 20 degrees for 6 months, there's a really good chance that you won't need one.

Having scoliosis is somewhat limiting, but if you are not experiencing pain, then you should be able to do pretty much what other girls your age can do.

Please stop worrying, and talk to your mom about your spotting. It's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about; it's a natural part of growing up, and you're at that age.

Good luck! Feel free to write to me if you have other questions.

I recommend brace evaluation at 23 deg. There is plenty you can do now to save your self back pain and arthritis later. See a chiropractor, but not just any chiro. Find one with advanced training in scoliosis correction.

Although 20 degrees is definitely scoliosis, it is a fairly minor curve. The fact that it hasn't increased in the last six months is really great news! Since you have a relatively minor curve and it is not increasing, my guess is that you won't be braced.

I suggest that you ask your spine specialist these questions. After all, your doctor is the one that has seen your xrays. Your doctor shouldn't mind the questions and will probably be impressed that you've taken an interest in your back.

If you were to be braced (your spine specialist's decision), the kind of brace would be up to the doctor. Different braces are made to work with certain kinds of curves so I can't say you'd be getting a Spinecor or Milwaukee, or some other TSLO brace. Some braces are to be worn "night and after school" while others are to be worn "23 hours a day" so again, I can't say which would be for your case.

You'd probably wear it either until you stopped growing or if your curve was bad and getting worse such that you needed surgery. ***You are most likely not going to need a brace *** (at least not right now) so please don't get yourself worked up.
