Questions about Scoliosis?

Scoliosis can sometimes cause the rib cage to shift its position. How might this interfere with the functioning of the heart and lungs?

Why is it important to check for scoliosis in young people?

Lastly, how might a back brace and special exercises help a young person who has scoliosis.

1. Scoliosis can squeeze the heart and lungs without twisting by decreasing the amount of vertical space needed. It can also squeeze the organs with twisting by slowly moving the ribs so they move closer to the spine.

2. Scoliosis begins most often in teens. People's growth spurts happen during the teen years, which is when a person's curve is most likely to increase. Curves will increase during the adult years, but this happens more slowly and only if the curve is greater than 30 degrees.

3. Bracing won't fix the curve, but it may keep the curve from increasing, or at least slow down the rate of increase. If the patient has stopped growing, if the curve is kept under 30 degrees, it will most likely *not* get worse.

Exercises won't fix the curve but when you're wearing a brace, the brace tends to take over supporting your back, making your back muscles weak. Exercises need to be done to keep your muscles strong.

You may hear that exercises fixed someone's scoliosis. This might be true in a couple of cases. First, if someone has "functional scoliosis", exercises may be of benefit.

Nonstructural (or functional) scoliosis involves a temporary change of spinal curvature. This is caused by an underlying condition such as a difference in leg length, muscle spasms, or inflammatory conditions, (e.g. appendicitis), which may produce muscle spasm. Functional scoliosis is treated by correcting the underlying problem. The spine itself needs no treatment.

Secondly, if a very strict set of exercises is kept up for the rest of someone's life, I've heard a rumor that exercises have decreased the curve by using the muscles to pull the spine straighter. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS is that it is very difficult to keep doing the exercises for a lifetime. Once they stop, the curve returns.

srry i dont know the anwsers to ur questions but i do know that it gets a little worse every year maybe about 2 degrees and 2 of my friends have it
