Scoliosis & neck pain?

I had scoliosis when I was 14 & wore a back brace for 2 years. I'm 28 now, I've noticed in recent years that I get sore at the back of my neck right at the base, & it feels like the spine is sticking out a bit when I reach back & touch it. My scoliosis was pretty severe, could the bit of spine be sticking out because it got straightened out instead of being a big S shape? So technically, that made the spine a bit longer so it sticks out the top. I usually get the soreness if I've been in front of a computer for a while.

I doubt very much that your curve has gotten smaller on its own.

I'd see your scoliosis specialist to recheck your back. If your curve is over 30 degrees, even though you've stopped growing, it is possible for the curve to slowly increase. Mine did, going from about 50 degrees to 60 degrees over a 20-year period.

Your pain could be caused by a couple of things. First, your curve might have increased, as I noted above. Second, you've had scoliosis for a number of years and the stresses put on your muscles, bones, ligaments, etc. are different (because of the curve) than a non-scoliotic person's. In other words, age and gravity may have caught up to you sooner than you expected.

You may consider swimming (my favorite), yoga, or pilates to strengthen your core muscles and help make your back feel better. Exercises won't fix the scoli, but it may make you feel better.

Surgery is usually considered if the curve is over 45 degrees.

What's your Q?
I'm 18 and was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was around 15 or 16. I haven't gotten a brace but ya...I feel sorta numb on my left side sometimes and haven't dealt with it. I had an appointment with my sister to go to the orthopedic surgeon and I wasnt able to go to the appt. My sis said she was put on observation. I guess we're not that severe though...she said her angle was 40?

hate sitting ! :b

find myself lying in bed a lot
