SCOLIOSIS treatment. Can I succeed?

Hey, I'm not yet a teen and I have been diagnosed with Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and the guy recommend a Boston Brace to push my spine into place. Scoliosis runs through my family's genes - so it's not something new. My mum can't bear to see me in pain n neither can my dad. So they made the decision for me not to wear the brace anymore - i hope my yoga, swimming and karate will help. Do you think I'll make it?

I think you should wear the brace now, while you are still young and growing, in the hopes that it will put your spine into better alignment. When you are younger, your bones are not yet fully hardened, and they are more succeptable to being corrected. Any way you decide to go, good luck, and I wish you success.

I am sure it would help. I am 23 and have just been diagnosed with mild scoliosis. I find it so painful to sit stright. Or walk stright after a few mintues. Maybe I should take up yoga and swimming too.

you need the brace & they now do surgery when you turn 13 to help straighten the back. Your back is nothing to mess with. I have double scoliosis in my back & both curves go the same direction. I am 46 & I am starting to get that widows hump at the top of my shoulders.

PLEASE PLEASE get your brace and (according to your physician's advice) wear it to correct your scoliosis before it hardens permanently (about age 12). I say this because as an older individual I have it and was not treated for it when there was a chance for my spine to be corrected--young enough before it hardens for life. Now I suffer from severe chronic back pain, headaches, etc. If only someone had prescribed braces for me before my spine hardened, perhaps I would be spared all this middle-age pain. You are young now, but your problems may worsen with age. Get a second opinion if your brace causes you pain--perhaps the fitting is not right--or some other reason you're suffering. But if you think you're in pain now, wait until you're older and there is nothing left to do but either risk surgery (I opt out on that one--too risky) and/or commit to chronic unrelenting pain. Not all people with scoliosis have back pain, or so I've been told, but I know what I must live with. Young person, treat your condition NOW and try to bear as much as you can---because your brace will be taken off when your spine straightens. Mine will never straighten because it has hardened into its permanent ess-curve. Again, seek professional advice, and ask your parents to consider a re-fitting, another approach--before your spine hardens and braces don't help. I pray you don't have to live as I do because my parents didn't recognize the severity of my problem. As a result, I live, cry, and try to manage with daily upper back pain. A little pain now may save you a lifetime of pain later.

you better wear the brace like the others said i have conginital scoliosis and have endured 5 back surgeries three in the mid-'90s and the final 2 in 2000. and my scoliosis is also inherited but i'm not sure whi i got mine from

Well, it is kinda hard wear and even if you do, success rate is pretty low. You might want to check out Spinecor.

Have your parents take a look at http://myscoliosis.net/news.aspx

There's a comparison chart on the bottom of the page of various braces.
