Does scoliosis surgery hurt? |
My Dr. just told me I have scoliosis, i dont know how much degrees because i still have to go to the lab and get my X-Ray done. But, something in me is telling me that i won't need surgery because you cant actually SEE any curves from far away as some people have. For example, i dont have one side of the hip higher than the other side, I actually look COMPLETELY normal! I had my entire lower back fused and have rods going up my entire spine. I am 11 months post op today actually. From what you said you will most likely not need surgury. The doctors usually dont preform the surgury unless your curves are 40+ degrees and it sounds like yours probably arent. Before my back was fused one of my hips was higher than the other and one of my shoulders was higher than the other. The surgury did not hurt for me, the worst part was getting blood taken 3 times a day (I had low iron levels) and im not lying. The pain is different for most people but all I felt was alot of pressure and I was very very stiff. It was hard to get used to not sleeping on my stomach for a while. The most you will get will maybe be a back brace to wear until you stop growing. The doctor will continue to give you regular x rays a few times a year to see if the curve has increased, if it has increased alot in just a few years then the surgury MIGHT be a possibility but as of now you are not looking at surgury any time soon. Good luck with everything. Scoliosis is not fun to have as it is disfiguring and if you have to wear a brace many of your peers do not understand and will considor you an outcast. Just surround yourself with many good friends who understand, and will support you with this. You should check out spinekids.com its an online forum with kids and teens who have scoliosis and it will answer alot of your questions, it helped me out alot last year when I was about to have my surgery. I have had two surgeries for scoliosis, one a fusion (5th grade), and the other to put two rods in (Freshman in high school) I am now a senior in high school, with no complications, yet. don't worry about it... If you can't see you scoliosis, you will probably not need surgery unless it gets a lot worse. Your doctor may have you wear a back brace (but you can do what I did and just wear it at night). But you may not even have to do that, he may just say to watch it. |
