Scoliosis curve of the spine?

my 7 yr old daughter has scoliosis and her spine is now at a 45 degree angel. does any one have scoliosis or have a child with it. what did ur doctor tell u to do about it...she is wearing a back brace and the back brace did not help and she is in pain alot. if any one knows anything please answer back..

I know that there have been many medical advances since I had surgery for scoliosis when I was 14. Surgery and recovery time is much better than it was when I had my surgery. I would recommend talking about your options with your doctor and even consulting a 2nd (or more) doctor for more opinions. When I had my surgery, I know they liked to wait till you were finished with your growth spurt since the curvature can get worse during that time, but if your daughter is in a lot of pain, talk to your doctor and see if surgery is an option for her at this age.

My son who is now 26 has had two surgeries. When he was diagnosed at 18 (that was late) he already had a curvature that was about 47 degrees. In his case it was too late to brace. Remember bracing acts to stop any further curvature it does not reverse the damage that has already been done. From what I understand Scoliosis is a different sort of detrimental for a female, because females would some day need to bear children. My son pretty much made up his own mind to have it. In your daughter's case you are the one making the decision. I went to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and we had the head of spinal surgery there, at the time perform the surgery. My son's rods did break and that is why he needed a second surgery. The only thing I can suggest is that you consult more than one doctor and then do what you must so that your little girl is not in constant pain. I know it's difficult because even though my son was 17(18) he was still my baby. God bless both of you!

I haven't seen any questions about infantile scoliosis here, but there are a couple of Yahoo Groups forums that exist to discuss that topic. Get into Yahoo Groups, put "infantile scoliosis" or even just "scoliosis" into the search box, and they should show up. Join the groups, write an introduction post, and ask your questions there.

If your daughter needs surgery (and she probably will), she'll probably need "growing rods". These are special rods that support the spine while she's growing. Since using permanent rods and fusing her spine would greatly affect her growth, the growing rods are used so they can be lengthened as she grows, probably once every half a year. Talk to your scoliosis specialist about these.
