Scoliosis and children . . . .life?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was real small like 4 or 5. I鈥檓 21 yrs old now. Sadly nothing was done because of financial reasons and miscommunication with doctors. What I can remember of my last doctor visit when I was like 13 he said that I had a severe curvature. I sometimes have pain but it not bad a just rest it out it鈥檚 more like I鈥檓 tired then pain. One situation that happened was 3 years ago I had this agonizing pain, know that was horrible. That鈥檚 the only time that happened where I can say my back was a problem. Other than that may pain is moderate. Sometimes I just get tired and I have to rest but it doesn鈥檛 interfere in my life. I do what everyone else does. I鈥檓 concern and want to see a doctor because I might feel fine now but in the future who knows. If a doctor told me you can live a normal life in your situation I really would not change it. It doesn鈥檛 bother me it鈥檚 more of a health issue not an appearance issue. I鈥檓 loved regardless. Well the questions that I would like information on are the fallowing.
1. Does anyone know a specialist in Houston or in Texas?
2. Do you think surgery would work pros and con?
3. Can a person with scoliosis have children? If so is it a virginal birth or c-section or it depends?

Thanks I appreciate any answers

Hello! Sorry to hear about your situation, glad that you are doing good with your life. Here are some websites that I found for speacialist in Houston and more information where they talk about surgery.

My daughter was diagnosed when she was 12. Idiopathic. She had mod.scoliosis. She was told she could safely have children but the pressure from the first child took it's toll and made the spine into the "S", that is the worst. She was told that she could not have anymore children unless she had the bars installed beside her spine,so maybe that is the answer to your question #2. She did so and has gone on to have 2 more healthy children. She had all vaginal births. As for a Dr. in your area, look up Orthopedic surgeons.

My scoliosis was diagnosed in junior high and the curve is fairly significant, but because I had stopped growing by that time the scoliosis specialist said a brace would do no good. It hasn't been too much of a problem for all these years, but I'm always aware of how I treat my back. Surgery is always an option, but not until you're really having problems, if you ever do. I had 2 kids vaginally without any difficulty. I'm not in Texas, so I'm sorry I can't be of any help with a good doctor.

I can't recommend anyone, but if you look at http://www.scoliosislinks.com/ScoliosisS... you'll see a couple of scoliosis specialists in Houston. The web page points to many doctors around the country so if you don't like the doctors in Houstin, there are other places that you may want to consider.

Pros - You've really told us nothing about your spine. But in general, scoliosis specialists are pretty good at getting correction and reducing pain. 100% correction is almost never possible so don't be worried if you're not perfectly straight after surgery. The same thing applies for pain. Pain will most likely be reduced (even greatly reduced), but there may be some remaining. Every patient is different. Also, you're young and will probably recover quickly - or at least quicker than I did.

Cons - You'll have reduced flexibility, but that comes with the territory.

People with scoliosis can usually have children. As with people without scoliosis, birth can be either vaginal or cesarean. Only someone that has examined you can tell which applies to you.

You'll need to talk to your scoliosis specialist about these questions.
