Sciatica-Will it ever go away???

2 weeks ago I started off with a dull lower back ache-48 hours later I could hardly walk-was screaming in agony as the pain went from my back down my bum and down my left leg.No position was comfortable and even laying down was impossible!I have had 3 children but this pain beat the pain of childbirth hands down!I went to casualty where they gave me Valium and some really strong painkillers-they think I have Sciatica. After 4-5 days I began to walk again-still in pain and as the days went on I got better and better-now I am staring to get it again-if I stay in one position for too long I struggle to get up or walk and I have a constant pulling sensation going down my bum and left leg-it is getting really depressing now and painkillers aren't even touching the pain and I don't know what to do-Any advice would be great please???

I have struggled on and off with sciatica since I started having children. (I have 3 too!) There would be those days when I could hardly move at all, dragging my feet on the floor while trying to walk because the pain was so fierce that I couldn't lift my leg. There is hope!! I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a massage therapist, and she took me in for free to try to solve my problem. She focused on my major problem areas, mainly my lower back and my buttocks. As awkward as it was to have someone massaging my butt, it was a life saver. At first, I went twice a week, and now I am not going at all. Whenever it starts to act up, I either go for a session, or do it myself. Its worth the time and money!!! I hope you feel better!!

i have had this same pain four times. after doctors and medicine were no help, a doctor friend of mine told me to try a chiropractor or an osteopath phyisican. each time it woreked. it takes a few sessions but the pain is gone. ater you must be very careful not to strain your back. no heavy lifting

Are you sure that they didn't say that you had sacrolitis. Sacrolitis is the inflammation of the sacrolatic joint. It is located at the base of your spine and where the hips connect.

I suffered from low back pain and sciatic nerve pain for years. Come to find out that I had a case of sacrolitis that never went away and thought for the longest that was all it was. Come to find out even later-after one morning I got up and could bare walk or even straighten up-walked like the hunch back- I had a medical condition called Reiter's Syndrome which is an auto immune disease.

I would suggest that you seek out a medical doctor and have them to do a MRI. There are five nerves that branch out in this area that run down your legs. The MRI should be able to show what is causing the pressure. Also it could help aid in diagnosing if there is a possible underlying condition. Have them do a blood test for HLA-B27 if there is no signs of bulging discs or damage to the vertebras. There are several diseases that can mimick simple sacrolitis. Discuss with your doctor.

If you start having other symptoms or have had any of this symptoms let your doctor know right away such as muscle spasms, joint pain in other area, sausage fingers or toes, Uvietis, Iritis, burning or stinging when you urinate, gentile sores.

In the mean time, take over the counter meds such as IBprophen and such. Use ice and heat and rotate ever twenty minutes. Try hot showers. Bed rest is good but don't do it too much since it can weaken the back muscles which can cause the problem to get worse.

I know the pain that you feel and I hope that you get better soon. I know that it is very difficult to deal with this at this time, being a mother myself of two girls.

I would highly suggest you see a physical therapist with training in mechanical diagnosis and therapy.

The focus of the treatment is educating you on how you can help solve this problem through specifc movements and positioning. The key is to actually solve the problem, not cover it up with medications, massage and modalities. Sciatica is not typically a condition of the muslces, it is usually an alteration of the position of the joint (often because of a disc)...therefore, only repositioning the joint either through movement, positioning or hands on techniques can help solve this problem.

The emphasis is on what techniques YOU can do to heal the problem...hands on techniques are only utilized when patient applied techniques only give a partial response.

Pain medication and muscle relaxers do not work because this is a mechanical problem...and, therefore, requires a mechanical solution (ie, movement or positioning)...not a chemical one.

I would suggest you discuss with your physician getting a referral to see a PT and then go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org to find a PT who is credentialed in MDT.
