Sciatica pain - can pain be relieved?

My wife has sciatica pain in one of her legs. Is there some kind of massage technique I can use to relieve her pain?

I only can recommend to go for a one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect on the self-healing power of the body is simply amazing, experienced it myself! :-)

Just - the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing approx. 220 dollars. It's really worth travelling far.

Yah there are so many tech..... for that pain

Hey,,,
Try this,, it works for me.....
Lay down flat on your back.. put a regular chair under your legs, and rest for 30 minutes... you can use a pillow for the head..

Remember to keep the legs at an angle upon the chair....
I dont know why,, but it helps......

Good luck

Homeopathy for SCIATICA :-
Try ARNICA 200C and RHUS TOX 200C together at half hour interval between doses and when she starts feeling relief just one dose a day will be enough till cured ! Take it for three days and let me know the results for any amendment or revision of remedies.
Take Care and God Bless You and Your Family !

massage the muscles around the lumbar region for about 20 minutes, that will loosen up the tension around the back. then tell her to do some stretching.

lie on your back, grab behind your knees, pull knees towards your head and lift your head to your knees, repeat this for about ten reps, do a couple of sets of these per day

also there are a lot of other exercises out there that will help with back pain

i know that this is an about dot com site, but the information is good for your back, i had problems and these exercises worked for me, so did running, it made my back stronger...good luck

sciatica pain is only on the right leg. if it is her l leg it is not sciatica. either way .get her to see a chiropractor or osteopath.
i was told i had sciatica by doc. went to chiropractor. doc was wrong. pain concede to my chron's colitis.

I've been suffering from sciatica pain for over 34 years and although you can temporairly relieve the pain with massage, exercise and heat, your wife really should see a doctor.

I'm not doctor but I suspect she may have a herniated disc that may be causing the problem.

Please have her see her family doctor who will refer her to a specialist to run tests to actually see what is causing her problem.

Why make her suffer anymore than she has to.

I wish her luck.

I recommend a Chiropractor... A Chiropractor will be able to help relieve your wife's sciatica pain, and with a few adjustments she probably won't have the pain again. Sciatica is caused by a bone in your spine being out of line and rubbing on a nerve - massage may help her feel better, but only temporarily - the bone needs to be moved back into line. Good luck! I hope she feels better soon. :)

I don't know about massage....but, Motrin worked best for mine.

My doc prescribed the 800 mg. ones.

Hope she feels better soon!!!

Short of back surgery stretching walking hot soaks sleep with legs bent muscle relaxants and valium.

YES IT CAN BE RELIEVED! LET ME GIVE YOU A COMPLETE SOLUTION

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain resulting from irritation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica pain is typically felt from the low back to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the low back and extends through the buttock area to send nerve endings down the lower limb.

What are causes of sciatica?

While sciatica is most commonly a result of a disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of this nerve can reproduce the symptoms of sciatica. These cause include irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury, and other causes.

How is sciatica treated?

Bed rest has been traditionally advocated for the treatment of sciatica. But how useful is it?

To study the effectiveness of bed rest in patients with sciatica of sufficient severity to justify treatment with bed rest for 2 weeks, a research team in the Netherlands led by Dr. Patrick Vroomen randomly assigned 183 such patients to bed rest or, alternatively, to watchful waiting for this period.

To gauge the outcome, both primary and secondary measures were examined. The primary outcome measures were the global assessments of improvement after 2 and 12 weeks by the doctor and the patient. The secondary outcome measures were changes in functional status and in pain scores, absenteeism from work, and the need for surgical intervention. Neither the doctors who assessed the outcomes nor those involved in data entry and analysis were aware of the patients' treatment assignments.

The results, reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that after 2 weeks, 64 of the 92 (70 percent) of the patients in the bed-rest group reported improvement, as compared with 59 of the 91 (65 percent) of the patients in the control (watchful- waiting) group. After 12 weeks, 87 percent of the patients in both groups reported improvement. The results of assessments of the intensity of pain, the bothersomeness of symptoms, and functional status revealed no significant differences between the two groups. The extent of absenteeism from work and rates of surgical intervention were similar in the two groups.

The researchers concluded that: "Among patients with symptoms and signs of a lumbosacral radicular syndrome, bed rest is not a more effective therapy than watchful waiting." Sometimes conventional wisdom is not as wise as research!

Other treatments for sciatica include addressing the underlying cause, medications to relieve pain and inflammation and relax muscles, and physical therapy.
