Sciatica in a fourteen year old? Or something else?

I am a fourteen year old freshman girl. I am a serious soccer player and I play for three teams. About a month and two weeks ago, I developed really severe pains running from my lower back down my right leg into my ankle. It lasted for about a week and a half then went away for about a week. Then a week ago I was struck again with even more severe pain in the same leg. It was that bad (pretty much unbearable) I had to leave school because I couldn't even walk :( (FYI I'm very tolerant to pain so this was pretty serious.) I went to my pediatrician who suggested it was sciatica and I should rest it and take Aleve. It's been a week since then, and it's been good because I've rested it and I've taken Aleve. But yesterday (Wednesday) I felt mild pain in my leg when I walked. Now today, it was back full force. I was afraid to sit down in class because the pain was SOO terrible when I sat down. Are these just reoccuring sciatic flare ups or something else...? Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, I've been extra careful to make sure I've stretched adequately before and after all my practices & games. I even stretch sometimes during when the pain gets too bad.

I would ask your Mum to take you back to the doctor if the problem is persisting, perhaps the medication isn't right for you. A qualified person will be able to give you the correct information and if it looks like it's coming back I would go sooner rather than later!

I don't want to sound rude, but I'm going to say it anyway, are you doing enough warming up and cooling down exercises?

I worked in a chiropractic office for over 11 years. Sciatica is common and easily treated with gentle manipulations and therapies...such as ultrasound and electrical stim. If the Aleve and rest aren't cutting it, you might benefit from that.

Good luck!

Sciatica is certainly possible. In your case, it might be caused by an irritated or ruptured disc. Time to see the doc!
