Exercises For Sciatica?

I have sciatica pain on the left side. It comes and goes and sometimes it's worse than others.

I'm not interested in drugs, injections or surgery as I don't believe the treat the problem long term.

Can anyone recommend exercises to do?

The piriformis stretches are what you are looking for.

You want to stretch the S-1 vertebrae which is where the nerve root is that goes to your buttocks and down your leg causing "sciatica".
Lay on the floor bring the left knee as far to your chin as you can and comfortably hold it for 15 seconds. Relax and do it again, repeat 5 times. Alternating heat and ice to your tailbone area can also help.

Exercise prompts your body to release endorphins 鈥?chemicals that prevent pain signals from reaching your brain. Endorphins also help alleviate anxiety and depression, conditions that can make your pain more difficult to control. What's more, combining aerobics with strength training and exercises that maintain or improve flexibility can help prevent age-related degenerative changes in your back.

If you're new to exercise, start out slowly and progress to at least 30 minutes most days. To prevent injury, consider learning proper weightlifting techniques from a certified personal trainer, fitness specialist or physical therapist.

Stretching type exercises can be a bit tricky and not everyone has the flexibility (this is not the cause of the sciatica) to do a lot of those type exercises right off the bat.

If you don't want to risk sparking your sciatica pain, a gentle approach is probably a good way to go.

There is a back settle exercise that you can find a description of here http://exercises-for-sciatica.weebly.com...

It can be a little tough getting down there, but it feels great once you are there.
