Who knows about Sciatica? |
Ok...my dad has been having this huge pain in his knee and it is bothering him a lot. We went to the doctors and finally realized it was a pinched nerve or Sciatica. What should my dad do to get rid of the pain. Right, i dont want to be the messenger of doom & gloom but sciatic pain does not just go away as it is usually the result of a trapped or twisted nerve.I personally have had sciatica 3 times and it has resulted in 2 operations but this does not mean the same will be in store for ur dad First time i had to get discs taken out of my spine then 5 years later i had to get a replacement hip installed and i now find that for the last year i have sciatic pain again. The problem ur dad will come up against is the time it tkes to see the relevant specialist about his problem as a local GP cannot help exept by subscribing painkilling treatment and then if a small operation is needed it depends on the hospitals timescale. However, now the good news...ur dad may not have sciatica as there are many problems which present the same symptoms and can be easily treated by a chiropractor. Tell ur dad i truly wish him well for the future My mom had the same thing happen. She had to go through lots of physical therapy but they did try an experimental treatment program that helped. They injected botox into the muscle which froze them. It really helped. She still has occasional pain but is much better. Report It I also have this. Physical therapy is needed. Stretching the muscles regularly works wonders. The sciatic nerve runs down the back bone and down the legs. Try a Yahoo search for sciatica + "natural remedies". i reccommend you grt him this book NEVER START PT UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH, YOU COULD EXACERBATE THE PROBLEM. Simply request an MRI or do a nerve conduction test (not EMG. EMG's only look at large nonnoiciceptive [large] pain fibers while the NCT will examine A-delta and C-fibers which are small and cause pain, numbness, and tingling down the legs. In general, EMG's come back normal unless it is really significant). It could also be piriformis syndrome (spasmed butt muscle), facet arthropathy (arthritis in the back), or compression of the superior gluteal nerve. You may also consider a Baker's cyst in the back of the leg or DVT (blood clot, but causes swelling as well usually). You love your dad, i liked it very much. |

Yes, it sounds very much like sciatica. The pain is due to a prolapsed disc pressing on one of the nerve roots to your sciatic nerve. It is best to see your doctor who will perform a few tests.... If you have numbness then you need to see a doctor again; sooner rather than later. Numbness is a sign of the nerve being compressed.
