With the growing numbers of obese children; why don't school offer health lunches?

Schools do offer healthy lunches. It's usually the meals at home that are the problem. And lack of exercise. Schools offer gym classes and recess to provide opportunities for exercise. Why should schools be responsible for parents failures?

they have begun this in las vegas. cutting on the fatty foods and more balances and healthy stuff.

they do,,

They do now. Its the parents that buy inappropriate foods that aren't changing.

Schools do offer fairly healthy lunches. This is only one meal out of three or more, five days a week for about 8 months of the year. Healthy luncehs can be high in calories too.

there are more fat kids cause there is easier access to food and candy, chips, coke and kids take advantage of it and i think schools do good at lunch except for middle/high school

oliver tried to promote health lunches in england didnt he? and kids wouldnt finish their lunch and parents got concerned - in the end, they went on a strike against his project.

so this proves that parents would rather have their kids finish their lunches and grow obese

because it might cost more, or they have to stick with what the district gives them. sometimes they do offer healthy lunches, but kids also bring lunch from home.

The main reasons are probably because unhealthy things are cheaper and also easier to mass-produce.
At my school they did have healthier options, but only a very limited supply and unless you were one of the first people in they were all gone and all that was left was chips etc.

The kids won't eat them.

When I was in elementary school, a hot lunch was provided. If you didn't bring a sandwich in your lunchbox, you ate turkey tetrazini, or sloppy joe, or any of a number of meals that included a vegetable side and a dessert.

When I got to middle school, suddenly there was a separate "hamburger" line with fries, and you could get a soda instead of milk.

Guess how many kids ate the turkey tetrazini ??

When I got to high school, there was also a student center with coke and candy/chips vending machines. Also, an open campus meant you could choose Taco Bell or Wendy's, if you wanted. BY this point, the cafeteria's "healthy meal" option was the fastest service because there was never a line to get it.

On the plus side, by the time I graduated, they had added a salad bar to satisfy some people's desire to eat light and get some nutrition...

The school I graduated from recently and my sisters are in now do not offer healthy lunches, to all those saying otherwise. Also, gym in elementary is once a week, not mandatory in middle school, and only required one semester in highschool, and you can choose to walk instead of participate.

As for why...they are cheap. They put all the money into things like football so they get whatever food is cheapes...if that means its drowning in transfats and preservatives, so be it. It really is a shame V_V
