Do they still teach Health and Sex Ed in school?

Do parents do anything to educate their children on these subjects? From the questions I keep seeing here, I don't think so.

I had to take sex ed when I was a freshman in high school. It was a requirement. It was an okay class; I learned some things I didn't know as well as things I already knew. They basically preached abstinence, which I thought was pretty stupid. Sure it's the only thing that is 100% effective in preventing STDs and pregnancy, but come on, most high school students are going to have sex. There's just no way around it. Not everyone waits till marriage.

My parents never talked to me about sex. It was just never something we sat down and talked about. All my dad would ever say to me was "don't get pregnant!". That's basically all I got out of my parents about sex.

I also took a college class called "Human Sexuality" a few years ago. GREAT class! I would highly recommend it. It covered everything from homosexuality, to STDs, BDSM, pregnancy, etc.

Some of the questions on here are pretty surprising though. It makes me wonder how much sex education these people got! And it's scary that they are so uneducated about STDs and pregnancy!

The internet is fast becoming a surrogate for school-based sex ed. In some ways that's good -- schools are too busy politiciking to teach accuate material. But the Web is what it is, and searching for good info can be tough. Bravo to places like Scarleteen and Teenwire! Report It

I educate my kids and they also get it in school where my kids go. The trouble is they don't cover subjects deep enough in my opinion. A friend of my daughters was having sex 2 years ago with my sons friend. When I found this out I asked my daughter if her friend was using birth control and her reply was "no but Mandy won't get pregnant anyway because of all of the meds she takes for her bi-polar". I quickly set my daughter straight and this and told her she needed to try to set Mandy straight too before something serious happened. As you can see even with sex ed and being taught at home there are so many complex issues involved.
