Nephew with schizophrenia! (please help)?

I am really sad and worried. My nephew was diagnosed with schizophrenia. For a period of time he had done very heavy drugs. Would he not gotten sick if he had not done drugs? or he was going to get schizophrenia anyways? What are the symptoms of schizophrenia? What are the most effective medicines? How can I help him? Is he going to be able to live a normal life (work?). Please help. Argentox2@yahoo.com

Your nephew would have likely developed schizophrenia anyway; however, the drug use could have caused an earlier onset. Drug use does not cause schizophrenia in someone who is not already genetically predisposed. Abilify is the first and only third-generation anti-psychotic and is benefical in treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder without the side-effects of other antipsychotics. I have personally been taking Abilify for my bipolar disorder and it has helped drastically in stablizing my moods.
And you get my e-mail answer to your other question? You can also e-mail me at lalannert@msn.com.

well no one knows if he would have been even if he hadnt done drugs.but go to webmd.com and type in scitifr...(i cant spell it) and you will be able to find out the answers to your questions, or you SHOULD be able to.

Schizophrenia is inherited mostly...I don't know if using drugs could have helped but I don't think is the cause. some symptoms are delusions, seeing things or hearing voices that aren't there, some people feel as if they are being tormented, ie bugs crawling on them, sometimes sleeplessness. I was diagnosed with it and I live a normal life with my meds. I don't know of all meds, but seroquel works for me. I have my own home based business. they would most likely try different meds with him until they got it right. Took 2 different meds til we got mine right.
