Schizophrenia.....how to cope as a loved one?

I will be moving in with my mother-in-law on the first of the month and she has Schizophrenia. I only know this because her doctor told her son....she signed a release. I know what I see of her in brief periods of time but what is it going to be like when I live with her.

if anyone lives/lived with someone with Schizophrenia please I am very interested to know how things will be. She is on meds and takes them most of the time. She does have days when she will say she didnt take them because she felt fine. She doesnt even admit to herself/others that she has a problem.

How will I cope? how can i help?

she is not a saftey hazard for me. I dont think...she stands about 5 foot tall and is 100lbs soaking wet

Are you sure that you want to do this?
If her compliance with meds is "most of the time" then you have some concerns that you need to consider.
What is she like when she takes her little "no med holidays"? Can you live with her behaving in an antisocial manner?
Are you going to be safe?
Maybe she is fine and keeps to herself. But if she is in your space and stressing you out, then think twice about this. Maybe you all need to have some kind of "contract" that defines house rules and what you will be doing if someone disrespects those rules.
Good luck, It is nice that your family is together on this. Just don't let yourself be overworked and overstressed.

It is impossible to predict. It will help if you are tolerant and have a sense of humour.
Don't try to help too much - just staying calm if something weird happens will be enough.

Best of luck, M.
