Question about marijuana and schizophrenia?

ive heard this claim many times before and am stiill unclear about it. i though that marijuana use can cause schizophrenia ONLY if the person has a family history of the disorder and is likely to get it, so in other words the marijuana just triggers an early onset of the disorder if the person is already prone to it. i thought it could also make symptoms worse. am i correct??
i would think that is marijuna truly caused you to get schizophrenia even if you DONT have the disorder run in your family then there would be ALOT of people with schizophrenia considering many people have either tried it or use to do it or actualy still do it and those people probably make up about 65% of the population. if you have any information regarding this please post it and post the link if you have one

I don't know I had a schizophrenic friend who smoked after he was diagnosed so he could feel normal!

Prolonged marijuana use promotes schizophrenia and paranoia whether you have those problems in your family or not.

Marijuana is no good.

Smoke it it's great!, no it is not it causes, Oh shut up , don't you tel me shut up.

Marijuana can trigger it, yes. But I've only heard studies of this when the person has previously had schizoid episodes, so they have already experienced shizophrenia episodes and then took the drug and it triggered more episodes. I have never heard, nor read or studied anything where marijuana CAUSES schizophrenia, so I dont believe that to be true.

Paranoia is very common with weed. But this feeling is not necessary. If you are feeling paranoid after smoking then you should either stop, because weed is supposed to be soothing, or think to yourself, "This is how it is - for now."

No anxiety is permanent, and when you're high you should be able to concentrate on how good and relaxed things are.

ok check this out ur confused u get the disorder if ur mother had it and gave birth 2 u now if ur dad had it and u smoke ALOT of weed continuously then u have a large chance 2 get the disorder but if it doesn't run in the family and u smoke and smoke then u have a chance of ur kid having the disorder also cocaine can actually GIVE u the disorder if it runs in ur family or not... same with heroin... hope i cleared that up.

Researchers believe it can be passed through genetics but Marijuana can cause symptoms like the ones in Schizophrenia.

The cannaboids in the brain are affected by smoking cannabis. Those with altered or unusual cannaboids are extremely suceptable to schizophrenia. Unusual or altered cannaboids are the result of genetic inheritance traits. Although smoking cannabis can trigger a schizophrenic episode in someone without schizophrenia because it interacts with the cannaboids, those that DO have schizophrenia have a larger chance of having a reaction because of already disturbed state of the cannaboids.

Pot does not cause schizophrenia. there's just no way. I think that schizophrenia lies dormant in your brain, and any number of things can set it off: acute drug use, extreme stress, a tragedy, a huge change in someone's life. There's no way that a person who is not prone to mental illness is gonna go schitzo from taking too many bong hits. It's just not gonna happen. There are negative side affects from pot, but that THAT.
(Warning: marijuana use may cause the consumption of raw cookie dough).

pot was laced i had no idea officer

A lot of people think it's just a correlation instead of a cause. The researchers say it increases the risk which makes sense. thay way, people who are already at risk has an increased chance and so it's a noticeable correlation.

I agree prolonged use caused paranioa with or without family history. That's a fact but that's if you smoke everyday & a lot.

Nothing can actually cause schizophrenia. . the drugs will give you similar symptoms, but not the disorder itself. However, if it runs in your family, you have the genes to be predisposed to it under the right circumstances. As in, smoking marijuana will trigger the dormant disorder. Stress or trauma can trigger schizophrenia as well, but you have to be genetically predisposed.

The first thing you will notice from the answers is that few of these people have any clue what they are talking about, and lots of them will agree with anything bad that is said about marijuana, just because they think it is a good idea to agree with anything bad.

The short answer is that the jury is still out on the association between marijuana and schizophrenia. There is some evidence of an association, but it is not clear whether the marijuana caused the schizophrenia, or the schizophrenia caused the marijuana use.

In any event, as you have pointed out, if marijuana really did cause schizophrenia to any great degree then we would already be in the midst of a clear epidemic. After all, there are tens of millions of people who have used marijuana in the US over the last several decades and the schizophrenia rates aren't any different than they were decades ago.

People who have issues with this, or a family history of schizophrenia should avoid marijuana. But, it should also be said that they should avoid alcohol and every other recreational drug, as well.
