Are Schizophrenia and Diabetes Linked?

Are these two linked? My brother has been on Schizophrenia medicine for some years and now he has got diabetes. Can anything be done for this? His medication for schizophrenia can not be stopped.

Here is the site: http://diabetes.share-now.info

Jhon

no link whatsoever.try going to a doctor instead of web strangers.

no there is no link schizophrenia is in the head and diabetes u need him to go the doctors and get somethink for his diabetes .

No - they are not themselves linked BUT some medicines used to treat psychotic illness can cause diabetes.

This needs to be discussed with your brothers doctor.

There is a correlation (accordin to the diabetes UK site), however this is a link more with the medication than Schizophrenia itself. A lot of psych meds can cause weight gain, and obesity is a cause of diabetes.

The medication can lead one to develop diabetes due to weight gain caused by the medication. They could lower his dose or he could get injections instead. He would have to speak to his doctor about alternatives and changes in lifestyle.
