Surgical scars - how long till they fade away?

I had surgery about 4 weeks ago. Now I have a 5 inch scar on my lower abdomen. The Dr used dissolveable stitches and plastic surgery stitches, or steri strips I think,on the skin. In any case. It doesnt look too bad at all but below the surface it feels hard somewhat.

Was wondering how long in general it takes for these scars to fade out and blend in, and also will the hardness disappear too? Wondering if putting Vitamin E on the scar helps, aside from putting a scar cream on it. Is there anything else?

Scar is scar, and that doesn't go away, but you can help minimise it, as well. Yes, they will eventually fade to skin color if you take good care of them.

Scars take a while to fade away. Scars actually never completely disappear. The scar will be quite apparent for several months and then gradually fade. The dark color (red if you are a white person) where the incision was will fade very gradually, over a year or two. You can conceal the scar with waterproof concealer matched to your exact skin color if you are very self conscious about it. An example is Dermablend.
The band of scar tissue that you feel underneath will become less obvious in six months or so.
Take good care of yourself, eat nutritious food, don't overdo, take vitamins, get enough rest, don't do weight lifting or sports without your doctor's clearance. If you find yourself feeling very tired, be sure to talk to the doctor about it.

I got a big scar from surgery on my shoulder. The doctor reccomended Maderma. its at walmart and it helped fade my scar from bright red to a pale pink color. try it
