Scarlet fever is caused by group A streptococcus, a fairly contagious strain of bacteria that infects pharyngeal / nasal tissue. The symptoms are caused by a spreading of a toxin [erythemogenic toxin] produced by the bacteria.

Scarlet fever usually affects children until age 10 but can infect adults as well.
