Scarlet fever Question?

is it contagious?

Is it contagious? Yes it is.
Scarlet fever spreads by droplet and by contact transmission. Fomites and airborne transmission are rarely involved. Close contact is necessary to get the infected secretions from one person to the next. To become infected, children need to get the secretions from a sick child into their own mouths. Children are most contagious during the fever.

Ok, scarlet fever is a complication of Strep Throat. The person who told you it isn't contagious and to not treat it is way wrong! You need antibiotics of the penicilin family.

What happens is the body is attacked by the exotoxin produced by the strep bacteria, then you get a systemic sign of a rash accompanied by fever. Why it needs to be treated is because the infection likes to do something really nasty. It likes to attack the heart valves if not treated.

This is called rheumatic fever. Little vegetations implants themselves on the valve making it stenotic (smaller and hardened) Over a few infections you can develop a rheumatic heart disease. At that point the valve in your heart needs to be replaced. Now obviously this has to take place over a period of time. But treating it is better than ignoring it.
