Should scabies be reported to parents in a daycare?

I work in at a day care and a few weeks ago a child came to school with this horrible rash all over him. I made a comment that he should be sent home, but he wasent, a few days later he still had the rash, and when I asked about it again I was told his parents said they were bug bites. but they clearly were not, any idiot could tell that he had something! and what do you know about 2 weeks later (the whole time attending school!) he was dignosed with SCABIES!!! now I think my child who is in his class may have them. also not one parent was notified that there was a case of scabies in the school in fact, the teachers took all of the blankets from the cots in the class and washed them there to keep it a secret! is there anything I can do about this? is it Illigal not to notify parents of something like this?

I agree, something like that should be made known to other parents. I don't know if there is a legal requirement for the daycare to notify the parents or not. If you wanted to know you should be able to find out by contacting the government entity that licensed the daycare.

If I were not informed about something like scabies in a daycare, I would be very upset. If another child catches them from the daycare, and they find out that another child had them and they weren't informed, they can take legal action against the daycare.

most definitely, scabies is very contagious and spreads quickly especially among children, i work in the healthcare field and have seen first hand how it spreads and how hard it is to get rid of, of course parents shouldnt be told WHO has scabies but nonetheless they should be made aware that someone at the daycare does, regardless if it may hurt business temporarily, the children and families health is more important

Every child in day care needs to get a the cream to rid themselves of scabies. Call the Health Department. They get under the skin and travel in a straight line. Every parent needs to contact their Dr.s.

Unfortunately, I do not believe it is a reportable condition. When I worked as an EMT in a public school I of course sent such children home and they could not return without medical clearance. But it was not one of those reportable conditions.

In most places, individual cases of scabies (which actually are little mites under the skin) are not reportable.

Check your county public health guidelines. They will tell you how many cases are considered a reportable outbreak.

Scabies are very communicable in crowded situations where there is a lot of skin-to-skin contact. But a child who's been kept clothed and who has not shared linens probably does not pose a risk.

If other kids have not turned up with infestation, I think it's probably safe to assume the danger is past by now.

They're supposed to tell parents if there is an infectious outbreak from flus to colds to T.B.
BY LAW they have to tell you. And if you or someone else notices something odd like lice or scabies and if you work in a school BY LAW you have to report it. And everyone should know. Scabies is extremely contagious. It's body lice. So whether you have lice on your head or lice on your body, you need to report it and quarantine the problem. Hot water kills them, when you wash your bedding and stuff. Hopefully a hot shower may kill it on a person, but i think you may need lice medication shampoo. Ask your doctor but int he meantime if your child shows signs of this infectious disease KEEP HIM AWAY FROM OTHER KIDS!

The parents should be told, or the infestation will just continue.

I would contact the local authorities. Complain everywhere.

The treatment for scabies is a nerve toxin, so unsafe for repeated use, especially in young children.
