Scabies are a mite that crawls under the skin. They itch like crazy. They are kin to headlice but they crawl under the skin and live on human blood. They itch because of their feces that is excreted under the skin. You will need prescription medication to treat it. It is an ointment that is applied to all of the area of skin from the jawline down to the tips of the toes--every square inch. If you just apply it to the places that itch, the bugs just move to an untreated area. Scabies is very contagious.
I think it was the original 7 year itch. Without treatment it will last a very long time and they eventually die for in-breading. I suppose it could kill you if you get a bad infection from scratching and breaking the skin and don't get treated for the infection. But that is very rare.

It comes from other people. As the first poster explained, it is a mite (bug) that burrows under the skin.
