What is kaposi's sarcoma? |
What is kaposi's sarcoma? Kaposi's sarcoma is the most common cancer related to HIV and involves the endolethial layer of boold and the lymphatic vessels. Kaposi's sarcoma is a cancerous tumor of the connective tissue, and is often associated with AIDS. Before the AIDS epidemic, Kaposi's sarcoma was seen primarily in elderly Italian and Jewish men, and rarely, in elderly women. Among this group, the tumors developed slowly. In AIDS patients, the cancer can develop very fast, and may also involve the skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and other organs. Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a tumor caused by Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). It was originally described by Moritz Kaposi, an Austro-Hungarian dermatologist practicing at the University of Vienna in 1872. It became more widely known as one of the AIDS defining illnesses in the 1980s. |
