Is it possible to miss Ewing's Sarcoma in a blood test? |
I have symptoms of Ewing's, but I had blood tests for Lyme Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis. All websites I've seen have not mentioned blood tests under the ways to detect Ewing's, only CT scans, MRIs, etc... Blood tests will not diagnose Ewing's sarcoma. Imaging studies like a CT or MRI followed by a biopsy are needed to establish a positive Ewing's diagnosis. The Lyme tests just check for that. I suspect it's the same for RA. Your doc has already said you need an MRI. I'd say go with that. I've been to 3 web sites and read a chapter in my Merck Manual, and they all say the same thing. That the definitive diagnostic tests for Ewing's Sarcoma, and other bone malignant conditions is with surgical bone biopsy, and MRI's and CT scans. Usually x-rays of the most painful part of the bone will disclose the tumor. The leukemia's can be picked up when the WBC's are out of control ,and have taken over the bone marrow etc,and other symptoms are in a prodromal phase. several other types of cancers can be picked up with a blood test, but not sarcoma's. I believe it has to do with how and where the malignant cells grow and how they metastasize. If you had a routine CBC with a differential, they could tell by looking at the WBC's,and the shift, that something was wrong. I wish you well, and hope you have good news to report to us in the near future Take care. SW RNP. |
