Craving for salt, why?? |
I am a young woman; unable to have children; on several meds for dilated cardiomyopathy, epilepsy, diabetes, osteopenia and AVN; I have a supra-pubic catheter, so I drink at least 3-4 litres of water each day. I do sweat a lot because of my heart. I had my illnesses for a number of years and have been on my meds for a few years as well. The only thing that has changed in my lifestyle/diet is I am now eating organic foods, fruit, veg, coffee, chocolate, meat, salt, pepper a large bulk of my diet is organic. Could this be why I am craving salt. I only use sea salt I use so little, and I don't put salt in the water when I cook veg, only in soups or casseroles and pasta dishes. Just a bit more further info, my illness were diagnosed as follows: ok, firstly.. u poor thing! u are an absolute survivor with all thats going on and i wish you good health for the future! to answer your question? you need a little more salt, not too much though, maybe a pinch a day with food. because you drink so much water and sweat alot, you are flushing away electrolytes that are essential for your health. sea salt is good but it would also be helpful to add a little iodised salt to your diet too, iodine is also essential for health, without it in your diet, you run the risk of developing problems with your thyroid gland. also, i would, if i were you, not pay too much creedence to the whole fat/sugar/salt e.t.c is bad for you thing... scientists have just discovered that coffee is the most easily absorbable form of antioxidants in the human diet! the funny thing about the human body is that it can usually tell you, through cravings, what you need, for instance, my dad suffered for a long while from agorophobia... for a period of about 6months, he was craving bananas and could not figure out why, i did a bit of research one day and discovered that bananas contain a mineral that produces high amounts of serotonin in the body, the "feel good" chemical in the brain, at about the same time, his doctor recommended and prescribed him a "serotonin reuptake inhibitor" which increased his levels of serotonin. just goes to show, body knows best! eat what you crave!!! also, check out this link http://www.douglassreport.com you have diabetes your craving salt because your body needs more of it You probably flush the salt out of your system because you drink and sweat a lot. Because of your other illnesses I would check with your gp. There might be another cause or a side effect of medication. Some times for smokers,I dont know if you smoke or not,our taste buds get reduced somehow and we need salt to add ''taste''to our food.My ex father in law was using a lot of salt in his food, like half a teaspoon and he never even smoked.Good for you to be in an organic diet,as they wrote in the Sunday times, only last week, that apart from been dearer is also better for you. |
