Is salt really that bad for us? What will happen if I keep eating it?

I have already had my gall bladder removed because of a large gall stone.

But I crave salt all the time and I find myself eating a lot of salt. (Yes, I am anemic.) I haven't found any real salt substitutes that do anything for me, and the iron pills I have tried to take just about kill my stomach.

So my question is, what, if anything, will happen to me or my body if I continue to intake so much salt? Or is it all a bunch of hype?

Salt is not that bad for you unless you suffer from hypertension or some other related disorder. However, eating a lot of salt can lead to them, so you should limit your intake to 2400 mgs daily per the RDA. Or else you could have a problem. If you are taking in a lot of salt, drink a lot of water too, that will help wash it out of the system.

I would be more concerned with the craving for salt....the body usually causes cravings for what it needs....perhaps you are doing something to take the salt out of your system? Like perhaps drinking a lot of fluids already? Dieting or taking something like a diuretic? If not, then its time to see a doctor about this craving.

Its not a bunch of hype. I wonder why you connect the iron pills to this question? They seem unrelated to the salt issue. Why were you taking iron in the first place?

It's really only dangerous for those who suffer from high blood pressure. It can make you feel bloated and retain water though. Apparently prolonged salt intake, can lead to high blood pressure though. I found this on the Mayo Clinic website.

Nutritionally speaking, kosher salt and sea salt are no different than table salt. The difference between these types of salt primarily concerns their taste and texture.

Salt can be harvested from seawater through evaporation (sea salt), or it can be mined from inland deposits (rock salt). Either can be fully refined, and the end result is pure sodium chloride. Variations in the refining process result in different forms of salt.

The type of salt that most people use in cooking and at the table is from rock salt. Table salt is a fine-grained salt that often contains added iodine, which is necessary for normal thyroid function. It may also contain an anti-caking ingredient, such as calcium silicate, to keep it flowing freely.

Kosher salt is a coarse-grained rock salt that usually has no additives. Gourmet cooks often prefer the texture and flavor of kosher salt in cooking. It is often used in the preparation of kosher meats.

Sea salt comes in either fine or coarse grain and has a slightly different taste because of different minerals it contains. Many people prefer sea salt to table salt because they claim it has a more subtle flavor. Like kosher salt, sea salt contains no additives.

Although your body needs some sodium to function properly, most people eat too much sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure. Most experts recommend between 1,500 and 2,400 milligrams of sodium a day for healthy adults.

Also, you typically don't have to worry about iodine deficiency, if you use noniodized salt for cooking and seasoning food. Iodine is readily available in many other foods, including dairy products and seafood. Also, many processed foods contain iodized salt.

Salt that is sodium chloride is bad for you. The excess sodium causes more work for the kidneys and at the same time causes a relative fluid overload in your system. Over time excess sodium causes long term kidney affects which in turn changes your blood pressure which in turn puts excess stress on your heart.

It causes high blood pressure and eventually heart disease.

Potassium chloride is a common salt substitute avoids all of this.

Added: "Sea salt" if its sodium chloride is the same exact thing as normal table salt.

obvious, heart disease

IT CAN CAUSE HIGH BLOOD.... AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT U DONT WANT.....STOP EATING ALOT OF IT.....

You body has to maintain a particular Sodium - Potassium balance to survive. More salt intake means the balance is altered. The result usually is high blood pressure and water retention.

Salt hurts more than you know try sea salt

high blood pressure and if you want to eat a lot of salt then be my guest!

it is a risk to your health, eg. hypertension which can lead to other health problems.

excess of salt can cause heart deseases, cancer......

I have heard that cholesterol can build up in your blood vesicles veins and cause health problems. So, I eat lots of salt to raise my blood pressure off the scale so I can blow all that nasty cholesterol out.

High blood pressure>>>>> stroke

I think so .it causes me to retain lots of fluid .so try not to use it or substitute it.good luck
