Sea salt vs. iodized salt?

What is the difference between the two salts. Are there better health benefits of sea salt?

Sea salt is all natural salt derived form the ocean. Iodized salt has iodine added to it. Iodine is used by your body to control thyroid problems including a horrible one called goiter, where a giant lump forms in your throat. That is why iodine is now added to salt. Goiter has now all but disappeared.

I know sea salt does not contain iodine, which you need daily for good health.

Keep in mind that there's a reason they started adding the iodine to salt. If you go off iodized salt for more than a short period, be careful about your thyroid levels.

Iodized Salt : A form of table salt, iodized salt is fortified with iodine that was lost during processing. Iodized salt was the first "functional food", fortified in the early 1920s in response to a Midwest-focused epidemic of gioter (hyperthyroidism) that was caused by iodine deficiencies.

Sea Salt : Available in both fine and coarse grains, sea salt has become increasingly available in markets but at a higher cost than table or kosher salt. Sea salt is made from evaporated sea water. Some salt farmers evaporate the water in enclosed bays along the shoreline, then rake up the salt by hand. This type of salt tends to include several naturally present trace minerals, such as iodine, magnesium, and potassium, which give sea salt a fresher, lighter flavor than standard table salt.

The only benefit is the stronger flavor. But you won't notice the flavor unless you have it on bland/basic foods.

Iodized has iodine in it that is important to consume if you dont eat a lot of seafood. Sea salt is typically a better choice than table salt because it is in a purer form and has less sodium per serving.

I would go with sea salt or kosher salt over regular table salt for health purposes and i just try to eat more seafood in my diet but iodine is important to preventing certain types of diseases. Its a trade off, but if you tend to retain water, sea salt is the way to go.
