Breaking my Salt addiction help!!!?

Its already in my family history for high blood pressure, My addiction for salt is horribly out of control at times, If I don't taste salt on my food I salt it till I do I need help on what I can do to break this habit and to stay away from it please and thanks for any advice given!

i had the same prob....my md put me on high blood pressure med and said i needed to cut down on the salt. try cutting down on prepackaged food --start reading packages everything now days has salt in it. try switching to low sodium products.
if you cant quit "cold turkey" start reducing the amount of salt you use...i used to put loads of salt on everything and now that i have cut back i find the taste of to much salt to be pretty gross.
good luck

get some treatment

move on

its all mental.. just like smoking... just dont use the salt and dont think about it. we are talking about your health ;)

I use the no-salt salt substitute (and sometimes Morton's Lite Salt - its half and half). You really do get used to it after a while, and I also started doing more cooking from scratch to get rid of the processed food sodium. Good luck!

Use Mrs. Dash or start using pepper on everything instead of salt. You will find you look to shake something on your food weather it's salt or not. I kept adding salt to everything now I use pepper and salt substitutes and it is great. When I taste something salty now I cringe....

I am suppose to leave it alone, also. It has been hard but hang in there.I was told to get that salt substitute called."Mrs.Dash."

Tough addiction to break! But just try really cutting down slowly. Real slow. If you use it in cooking, say a teaspoon, use the teaspoon and slowly make it less and less full. Until you get down to half or none at all. As for fries and what not, just really try to sprinkle very little on until you don't need any. Remember also to limit the things that have salt in their ingredients. Good luck. It is tough, but I did it!

i've got a shaker on my desk at work. So I can relate. My wife got a salt substitute and started mixing it in the regular salt. Gradually, I have become accustomed to it and she ups the ratio until now, I'm using almost all substitute. If I can only get rid of the shaker at work now...

I had the same problem!

I would tell my parents to hide all the salt.. I'm not addicted to it anymore :]

Try eating high flavor foods without salt, like stuff flavored with lemon juice and the like. And really, will power my friend! If you're such a salt addict, it's because you've been eating it so long your cells have reproduced with receptors to enjoy those foods, harmful or not. You just have to supplement with flavors you can find until you're used to it. Then, I promise, you'll actually start to dislike really salty stuff. Good luck!

Try buy ingredients with salt all ready added into it, or buy an alternative seasoning other than salt, and if this helps, food taste better with salt, and salt gives it the taste, but salt can also be dangerous if consumed in large amounts.

I have the same history in my family, so lately my mom has been using lemon juice instead of salt. She's addicted to salt too but she says its helping. Good luck!

i had too much sugar in my tea, like 5 tablespoons per mug.
day 1: i had tea normally
day 2: reduced the volume by half a teaspoon
etc etc etc

it works sorry man its tough i no how it feels

Dear, I was also facing the same prob. what u can do is try to have some citrus fruits like oranges with ur meal, initially u have to take fruit then meal and so on gradually try to reduce it, or if didnt work then take fruit salts or even u can use black salt (we use on salats and fruit chats) this will give u saltish taste and will not give u a blod pressure, do try it and tell me!
Hope it will help you

there are substitutes available!

for example a local brand (NATIONAL) here markets a salt substitute called "NO-SALT"... it's actually Potassium Chloride (instead of the table salt which is Sodium Chloride).

Potassium Chloride (KCl) has the same taste and texture as Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and is less dangerous to patients who suffer high blood pressure.
