When you're sad or depressed why do you feel worse at night?

Whenever I am in a sad mood or feeling low, it always seems like I feel sadder or worse at night just before I go to bed. I know it's dark and all ... but is there a real reason?

humans are naturally light-loving creatures. I forget the scientific name, but it's true. you might notice the same attitude if it is cloudy or raining. I forget what the disorder is called, but my mom has the same thing. some of us are more sensetive to the seasons than others in the fact that we can react more dramatically when the sun goes down or is not present. I would recommend turning all the lights on and curling up w/ a good book so you can forget that it is dark outside. put a poster or picture in your room that is of a sunny beach filled with palm trees. Brighten up your surroundings. Today it is cloudy and I was feeling kinda low, so I went and tanned for a few minutes and I feel ten times better. Its all about changing your surroundings to compensate for your grumpies. good luck!

During the day, you're occupied and focused on other things. But at night, you're more intuned on what's going on inside you. Report It

Because u know the next day you will be doing the sawme thing over again

Cause people feel lonelier at night.

If you are talking only about "normal" sadness or feeling down, you are likely to feel more down at night because you are more alone, you are more tired, and more likely to ruminate about things. During the day you are more involved in activities (work, friends, etc.) The more that you feel alone, or think about the things that you are feeling sad about the sadder you become.

For persons with more serious depression it is more typical to have increased depression in the morning.
