Track or Treadmill?

I just had surgery to repair a ruptured disk. The doctor told me that I can go back to my pre-surgery workout. I am going to start off walking and possible progress to running. What would be better for my back: a treadmill or track?

A treadmill provides a softer, more "forgiving" surface to run on but it is soooooooo boring. Ask your doctor if you can run outside and if so, what surface...track, road, grass...

I would think a track, providing that it is cushioned. Stay off of the road and treadmills are not so forgiving on the joints
