It's transmitted by tick bites usually. It's not contagious.

It's tick-borne.

I do not believe it to be contagious as it is gotten by getting attached to by a particular species of tick.
A friend of mine allowed his two daughters ages 7 and 4 to visit grandparents in Colorado and upon their return to Texas, the 7yr old got sick and had to be hospitalized and a day or two later so did the 4yr old.
It was not until after the death of the 7yr and an autospy was performed that it was discovered why the 7yr old died therefore they were able to treat the 4yr promptly and correctly.
Both of them still ticks on them in their hair that had gone undiscovered.

It comes from a tick bite, you can't get it from someone else.

Initial signs and symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, headache, and muscle pain, followed by development of rash. The disease can be difficult to diagnose in the early stages, and without prompt and appropriate treatment it can be fatal.
