Sometimes at night, my legs feel restless. What is this?

Some nights when I'm lying in bed, my calves feel like they need to move around. I'm pretty sure I don't have Restless Legs Syndrome, because it's not very often -- but when it does happen, it keeps me from sleeping. How do I make this stop?

Uh, I just said I don't have RLS, assholes.

I don't think the fact that it doesn't happen often rule out RLS.

Once when I took a benadryl & a glass of wine, I spent the whole night totally exhausted, wanting nothing more than to fall asleep, but feeling this discomfort in my calves that was only aleviated by movement. I almost wanted to mount an exercise bike to the foot of the bed so I could bicycle in my sleep. It was horrible!

When I was on antidepressents, I would sometimes have the same problem if I drank any, or occasionally even if I didn't (though to a lighter degree)

When you have these symptoms, take note of what you have taken or drank the night before. That could be the trigger to avoid. I always make sure I don't drink any past 8 or 9 so the alcohol will be out of my system before bedtime. (I go to bed late)

I hope you find out whats triggering it, & that its something you can avoid. Good luck.

* I just read your profile & found out your pregnant. The hormone changes could be triggering the problems. Talk to your doctor. Good Luck again.

theres actually a medical condition called restless leg syndrome, and its symptoms vary greatly. google it for more information, but its definitely a possibility.

Try www.rls.org they have info on restless leg that may help you

Do you take any anti psychotics? Abilify at too high of an initial dose casuses that. So does Parkinsons disease, Shy Drager and other Neurological disorders I know nothing about. See a neurologist. They are usually very smart and full of ideas.

Do you by any chance take Zoloft? I do, and I also have the restless legs thing once in awhile, but not all the time. I'm pretty sure mine is a side effect of the Zoloft. I don't know of anything to make it go away unless you take a Rx for specifically that...for me it's not too bad so I just deal with it.

*Upon reading your "further details"...

You asked for help and ppl are saying what they know--don't post a question and then call ppl "assholes" for trying to help. You don't know if you have RLS or not--have you been to a doctor, Einstein? Until then, put up or shut up. That was rude.

*Ok, I'm retracting my claws. Sorry. Lost self-control there for a moment. Don't shoot me. But I still think you were being rude.

RLS....

yes.. that is what you have. I have it too. It doesn't have to happen often. To me, it feels like my knees turn into jelly and I have to get out of bed and bounce around for a few minutes. Wanna know something that works wonders for me.... tylenol.... I can't explain it, but it makes the feeling STOP (it takes about 15 minutes though to get the feeling gone.)

...and your the ***hole..... ***hole

I get this also. What makes me feel better is to get up and walk around a bit or stand on my tiptoes for a minute or two. Are you sure you don't have RLS? You might want to check it out with your doctor. I have it and have been prescribed Mirapex for it.

I have the same problem sometimes. My doctor put me on iron pills and it's stopped the jerking.

I thought I'd answer this despite the fact that you are very rude. You claim not to have RLS. Do you know for sure? Because what you describe sounds just like it. So, it doesn't happen often. How old are you? It is possible it will become more frequent in time. RLS often goes hand in hand with other medical problems--like fibromyalgia.

I think instead of asking us and calling people ***-holes because you don't get the answer you want, you should ask a doctor.
