Do I have Tourettes, Restless Legs Syndrome or neither? |
I'm confused. Lets say I'm 12 and its been happening 1-3 years.. You know my question, now I'll tell you these 'symptoms'. Sounds like Tourette's. Although Tourette's is famous for people blurting out words, often swears or other vulgarities, a key part of Tourettes are tics. Tics are involuntary muscle twitching most often in the face (e.g. repeatedly tightly closely the eyes or making unusual facial gestures), but tics can occur anywhere in the body. In fact, the "blurting out random words" can be thought of as a "vocal tic." I suggest a consultation with a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Well it's not restless legs syndrome because when you have RLS it doesn't mean that your legs just randomly twitch, it means that you constantly consciously move your legs to rid yourself of a feeling or pain in your leg. Sounds like possibly two separate issues but both may be related to anxiety. I am relatively positive you are describing Restless Leg Syndrome. There are many effective treatments on the market for RLS today. I personally wouldn't suffer one more day with that. See a Dr! The other symptoms may be a nervous habit. If you were at a funeral would you be able to quiet yourself for the eulogy? If so, it's probably not that serious. If not, you may want to seek professional help. That... would be something different. Tourettes is more an affective disorder of the inhibition control center of the brain. You may merely like to fill voids of silence with the humming and such, and the blurting out... maybe you should pay attention to when you do that first. If you are trying to break the ice, ease tension or are otherwise uncomfortable or trying to be the center of attention even, that is exactly what might lead to such outbursts. As far at the leg issue, many people have the occasional random firing of neurons that get by our brains and make us twitch, as long as it doesn't come out as a major spasm or jerking reaction. So out of curiousity, why do you have to 'have' something? maybe, your'e just human ? |
