I have heard that pine bedding causes respiratory infections and such in hamsters, and even people...?

Could this be the reason they my fiancee's asthma has gotten more severe since we got out hamsters? He used to go the hospital about once every 4-6 months, but now he's been to the hospital about four times since christmas...has anyone had similar problems??

The short answer: Yes.

Pine bedding has numerous amounts of chemicals in it: Natural insecticides (To prevent mites, fleas, etc), odor eliminating properties (That's why a lot of people still use it for hamsters and other small pets).

The same chemicals that are so eagerly seeked can also damage the respiratory tract, causing chronic respiratory disease, and asthma.

There are plenty of alternatives such as Aspen bedding. It's not as effective for odor control, but it's worth it, especially if there's already a history of breathing problems with your fiancee.
