What respiratory disease is also known as whooping cough? pertussis Pertussis Pertussis (also called whooping cough) is a highly contagious disease that causes severe coughing spells. Children with pertussis develop thick, sticky mucus in the windpipe, which causes a series of a dozen or more short coughs in rapid succession.
