Pertussis

Pertussis (also called whooping cough) is a highly contagious disease that causes severe coughing spells. Children with pertussis develop thick, sticky mucus in the windpipe, which causes a series of a dozen or more short coughs in rapid succession. The "whoop" is the loud gasp children make as they struggle to breathe in through narrowed airway passages between the coughing spasms.

Whooping cough - or pertussis - is an infection of the respiratory system caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis (or B. pertussis). It's characterized by severe coughing spells that end in a "whooping" sound when the person breathes in.
Despite the vaccine, recently, the adult cases of whooping cough are on the rise in developed countries.
